First Live 3D Sports Broadcast – PGA TOUR MASTERS

April 13th, 2010 john 4 comments

The past weekend marked history in 3D broadcasting. The movie theaters have been very busy with new 3D movies such as Avatar but 3D technology at home is still trying to plant its roots into the North American consumer market. Comcast announced couple weeks back that it will be the first network to provide LIVE 3D Broadcasting of a sporting event. The PGA Tour set the record to be the first sporting event to be broadcast live in 3 dimensions( Tiger Woods also came back from his fallout last year). The 3D broadcast was available for existing customers at no extra fee, the only thing required was to have 3D capable TV and those fancy 3D glasses. Sporting events have a huge future in 3D as the TV broadcasting market has been effected heavily by the recent influx of alternative media such as the internet. The 3D broadcast was also available online for those with 3D enabled computer screens.

CRISTAL and Microsofts Table Top Technology

September 1st, 2009 john No comments

I read about CRISTAL a while back but a friend sent me a video of Microsoft’s stuff today and had to make a post…

CRISTAL = Control of Remotely Interfaced Systems using Touch-based Actions in Living spaces
Is an experiment based out University of Waterloo…Estimated to cost between $10,000 to $15,000…
I will let the video speak for it self…

Microsoft’s surface computing was first showed off last year but still cool and holds huge potentials…

Scan Eagle by Boeing fighting fire in Alaska

August 26th, 2009 john No comments

Just saw this on wired.com where I often check for the latest technology related news…
Boeing’s best selling aircraft currently is the Scan Eagle. It is an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle often referred to as UAVs.
I knew that UAVs were used in combat situations and a local company here in Calgary called CDL made some of the GUI control panels for them but it is first time seeing UAV for a different purpose…

The Scan Eagle can be used to fly through dense haze where it would be too dangerous for a manned aircraft.
It seeks out hot spots and fire lines using infrared cameras. Check out the video below to see the UAV launch, what the people see from the ground and see it be recaptured!

Also check out some vids on UAVs…these are a few years old but I’ve saved the links to them… enjoy!

Last launch of the current generation GPS satellite

August 21st, 2009 john No comments

Another GPS Satellite was launched on August 17th from Cape Canaveral.
This particular satellite is the last of 8 current generation satellites. The first one of the eight was launched back in 2005. Just like cars or any other technology the US Airforce continue to improve their products…
The GPS satellite launched on the 17th is called IIR-M and the next generation will be called IIF.

Here is a very cool video from the launch day!

Cent Mail

August 14th, 2009 john No comments

Interesting read I found on Wired, about a new initiative to cut down spamming…
So basically you prepay for your emails, where your payment is donated to a charity of your choice…
Each email will cost a cent and as long as the spammers are not able to hack the system it should work…

Chvrolet VOLT Claims Top MPG – 230 mpg & 40 miles on pure electric

August 11th, 2009 john 3 comments

Great news for GM today as they announced the fuel economy of the upcoming EV(Electric Vehicle) VOLT. (Maybe not so great news for gasoline retailers…)

The car is expected to be available in the next year.

One special thing to note about the Volt is that it can run on purely electric mode for up to 40 miles (64 km)…It is told that the 80% of daily commute is below 40 miles per day. Take this fact and combine it with GM’s efforts to keep this car under $40,000 it could change the auto industry and our steps towards a green planet.

OLED – The future of visual media

August 6th, 2009 john No comments

This new technology called Organic Light Emitting Diode will change the world significantly…

Flexible and paper thin display allows for many new ideas and new applications. This is the way of the future!

I can imagine in a few years having books with small illustrations done in OLED screens to show clips, text books with examples done in video. Maybe one day we can have a media wall in our homes which displays your blu-ray movies, digital photos, streaming video, all at once or at your discretion…

If OLED can be transparent it would open a whole new world of head up display applications…
